I recently had the opportunity to tour Royal Caribbean’s Jewel of the Seas, and I walked away genuinely impressed. While she may not have all the bells and whistles of Royal Caribbean’s newest mega-ships, I found plenty to love about this smaller, classic ship — including some unexpected surprises for families.
If you’re looking for a Royal Caribbean cruise from Tampa, Jewel of the Seas deserves a spot on your list!
Sailing From Tampa Through April 2027
Jewel of the Seas is sailing from Tampa through the end of April 2027, offering itineraries ranging from 4 to 8 nights. That variety makes her an appealing option for travelers who want a shorter getaway, a weeklong vacation, or something in between.
For families in the Tampa Bay area and travelers looking for a convenient Florida departure port, sailing from Tampa can be a great way to begin a vacation without flying to another port city.
There’s also something special about watching a cruise ship make its way beneath the Sunshine Skyway Bridge as it leaves Tampa Bay. The bridge is one reason Tampa’s cruise options are shaped by the ships’ height and ability to safely pass beneath it. That’s why Tampa’s cruise lineup tends to feature smaller ships rather than Royal Caribbean’s enormous newest vessels.
A Classic Ship With Plenty of Character
One of the things I loved most about Jewel of the Seas was her classic cruise-ship atmosphere.
The deep burgundy and navy décor in the clubs gave the ship a rich, traditional feel. Instead of everything feeling ultra-modern and oversized, there was a sense of character and warmth that I found appealing.
Yes, Jewel of the Seas is an older ship, and some areas look dated compared with Royal Caribbean’s newest vessels. But I think that’s part of her charm.
Not every vacation needs to be about the biggest ship, the newest attractions, or the longest list of onboard activities. Sometimes, a beautiful ship, good food, entertainment, and time together are exactly what you want from a cruise.
And Jewel of the Seas still has plenty to offer!
Surprising Family-Friendly Activities
I'll admit that I wasn't expecting quite as much for kids as I found onboard.
Jewel of the Seas may be smaller than Royal Caribbean's mega-ships, but I was pleasantly surprised to see a water slide, a rock-climbing wall, and a mini-golf course.
These are the kinds of activities that can make a cruise fun for families without requiring a ship packed with attractions at every turn.
Kids can burn off some energy, parents can enjoy the scenery and shipboard atmosphere, and everyone can find ways to enjoy the vacation together.
Families who want to experience Royal Caribbean but don't necessarily need the enormous waterparks, surf simulators, or extensive attractions found on the newest ships may find Jewel of the Seas to be a great fit.
The Enclosed Solarium Is a Standout
One of my favorite features for a Tampa sailing is the enclosed adults-only Solarium.
Imagine enjoying the pool while escaping the chilly air outside!
For winter and early-spring sailings, an enclosed pool area can be especially appealing. Depending on the weather and onboard conditions, it offers a more sheltered place for adults to relax and enjoy the pool without being as exposed to cold temperatures and wind.
It’s a wonderful feature to consider if you're cruising during the cooler months and still want that relaxing poolside experience.
And because the Solarium is adults-only, it offers a quieter atmosphere for those looking to unwind while the kids enjoy other areas of the ship.
Suites That Make You Want to Stay Awhile
I was impressed with the suites I toured. They were nicely appointed and offered a comfortable space to retreat to after a day of exploring the ship or visiting a port.
But the real showstopper for me was the two-bedroom Ocean View Suite.
The floor-to-ceiling window creates a stunning view of the ocean, bringing the scenery right into the living space. There’s something special about waking up to the water or relaxing in your suite while watching the ship sail.
And honestly? With a view like that, you may not miss having a balcony!
For families traveling together, the two-bedroom layout is particularly appealing because it offers more room to spread out and a little more privacy than a standard stateroom. It’s worth exploring if you want extra space without automatically choosing one of the most expensive accommodations on a larger ship.
Whether you're traveling with children or planning a multigenerational getaway, having a comfortable space to return to can make a difference in your cruise experience.
An Impressive Main Dining Room
The main dining room was another highlight of my tour.
It made a great impression, with a traditional cruise atmosphere that felt right at home on a classic ship. For me, dining is an important part of the cruise experience, and the main dining room is one of those spaces where the ship's character really comes through.
Cruising isn't just about attractions. It's also about enjoying meals together, dressing up for dinner if you choose, and having those little moments that become part of your vacation memories.
Jewel of the Seas offers that classic cruising experience without requiring you to book one of Royal Caribbean's newest ships.
Jewel of the Seas vs. Royal Caribbean's Mega-Ships
So, how does Jewel of the Seas compare with Royal Caribbean's larger ships?
The biggest difference is the overall experience. Royal Caribbean's mega-ships offer an enormous range of attractions, dining venues, entertainment, and neighborhoods to explore. Jewel of the Seas has a smaller selection of onboard activities and amenities.
But that doesn't mean one is automatically better than the other.
Jewel of the Seas may be a particularly good fit if you:
- Want to experience Royal Caribbean at a more approachable price point.
- Prefer a smaller ship with a classic cruise atmosphere.
- Are traveling with kids but don't need every mega-ship attraction.
- Want a relaxing getaway with pools, dining, entertainment, and family activities.
- Are looking for a shorter cruise or a convenient sailing from Tampa.
- Would rather spend your vacation enjoying the ship and destinations than trying to experience dozens of onboard attractions.
One of the biggest advantages is the potential value. Fares on Jewel of the Seas can be considerably lower than those on Royal Caribbean's newest mega-ships, although pricing varies by sailing, stateroom, and demand.
That can make it an appealing way to experience Royal Caribbean without stretching your vacation budget as far.
Is Jewel of the Seas Right for Your Family?
After touring the ship, I can absolutely see why Jewel of the Seas would appeal to both families and couples.
Families have activities to enjoy together, including the water slide, rock climbing, and mini-golf. Couples can appreciate the classic atmosphere, the enclosed Solarium, the dining experience, and the opportunity to relax without feeling like they need to be constantly on the go.
And for travelers who have never sailed with Royal Caribbean, Jewel of the Seas could be a wonderful introduction to the cruise line.
You don't have to book the biggest ship to enjoy a Royal Caribbean vacation.
Sometimes, a smaller ship with a comfortable atmosphere, beautiful ocean views, and the right itinerary is exactly what you need.
