Our family recently returned from a 4-night Cozumel Express cruise aboard Margaritaville at Sea Islander, sailing out of Tampa, Florida. And this wasn't just a family getaway.

We specifically booked this cruise to experience Margaritaville at Sea firsthand so we could better understand the experience and help future clients decide whether this cruise line is a good fit for their families.

I've been asked a lot of questions about Margaritaville at Sea, but one question seems to come up more than any other:

"Is it really a party boat?"

Well, I have thoughts. 😂

I'm going to break down what we loved, what I think travelers should know before booking, and my honest answer about the party-boat reputation.

Let's get into it!

The Good: What We Really Enjoyed

There was a lot to love about our time aboard Islander. While the ship wasn't perfect (no cruise ship is), we genuinely enjoyed our experience. Here are some of the highlights that stood out to us.

Our Grand Terrace Suite Was Amazing

Let's start with one of my favorite parts of the cruise: our Grand Terrace Suite.

We absolutely loved it!

The room was spacious, beautifully laid out and had plenty of storage. Having that extra space made a difference for our family, and the suite was one of the highlights of our stay.

The suite perks also made a big difference on embarkation day.

We experienced a significant issue with the previous sailing's disembarkation process at the Port of Tampa. The parking lines were incredibly long, and there didn't seem to be much communication about what was happening. We waited approximately an hour and fifteen minutes before we were finally able to drop off our van at the prepaid valet.

But once we reached the terminal, things changed.

Because we were staying in a suite, we were able to bypass the long general check-in lines and head straight to the suite lounge. We had no wait for check-in. While the staff was processing our information, the ship was cleared for embarkation.

And then we walked right on!

We ended up having several hours onboard with significantly fewer crowds, which was an incredible suite perk.

If you're considering a suite, this is exactly the kind of practical benefit I pay attention to when evaluating a cruise for my clients.

Our Room Attendant Was Wonderful

Our room attendant did a fantastic job throughout the cruise. Our room was serviced each day, and we appreciated his attention and care.

It's those little details that can make a vacation feel special.

The Crew and Staff Were Fantastic

I was genuinely impressed with the staff aboard Islander.

They were friendly, engaging and worked hard to create a fun atmosphere. I would even compare the level of attention and service we experienced to Disney in some respects, which is a comparison I don't make lightly.

The crew was consistently working, interacting with guests and helping create the laid-back environment Margaritaville at Sea is known for.

The Activities Were a Lot of Fun

There was a great variety of activities onboard, and we enjoyed participating in several of them.

Some of our favorites included:

• Line dancing lessons
• Karaoke
• Thriller dance lessons
• Live music
• Poolside entertainment
• Various games and activities

Jenna especially loved karaoke and the Thriller dance lessons. I love when a cruise offers activities that appeal to different ages and interests because it gives everyone a chance to find something they enjoy.

Ivan Skinful Was a Surprise Favorite

I have to talk about Ivan Skinful!

Jenna originally didn't want to go see the show, but we convinced her to give it a try. And guess what?

She loved it.

We all ended up really enjoying the performance. It was very well done, and I'm glad we went.

Sometimes the experiences you almost skip end up being some of your favorite memories.

Radio Margaritaville Was High Energy

Radio Margaritaville was another fun show with plenty of energy.

We did leave about 30 minutes into the performance because Jenna was ready to go, but I would have liked to stay and watch the rest of it. From what we experienced, the show was entertaining and lively.

If you enjoy high-energy entertainment, this is one to add to your list.

The Ship Was Very Clean

One thing I noticed throughout the cruise was how hard the crew worked to maintain the ship.

I regularly saw staff cleaning and taking care of the public areas. They also worked to keep the pool decks as dry as possible, which I appreciated.

The ship is clean, and the crew clearly puts effort into maintaining it.

Cheeseburger in Paradise Lived Up to the Hype

Let's talk about the food everyone wants to know about.

Cheeseburger in Paradise was worth the hype. Seriously.

We enjoyed it, and it was one of our favorite included dining options onboard.

If you're sailing Margaritaville at Sea, I'd definitely recommend making time for a burger.

The Kids Club Was a HUGE Win for Our Family

This was probably one of the biggest surprises of the entire cruise.

Jenna absolutely loved the kids club.

She kept asking to go back, and when we picked her up for the final time, she cried because she didn't want to leave. That tells me everything I need to know about how much she enjoyed herself.

The counselors were incredibly nice and worked hard to create a fun environment for the children.

Now, our sailing was smaller and there weren't a lot of kids onboard, so that may have influenced her experience. However, the fact that she wanted to return again and again was a major win for us as parents.

And yes, the slide was a hit with Jenna, too!

(I'm personally not a fan of enclosed tube slides, but she had fun. 😂)

The Recreation Deck Was Well Done

I thought the recreation deck was a nice feature.

It included:

• A decent cornhole course
• A good mini-golf course
• A great pickleball court

There were some fun ways to get active and spend time outside of the pool areas.

The Flip Flop Atrium Is Beautiful

The Flip Flop Atrium was one of my favorite design elements on the ship.

It's tastefully decorated, and I loved how the design carries throughout multiple decks. The atrium's vertical expansion across approximately 10 floors creates a really impressive visual.

It gives the ship a distinct personality and fits the Margaritaville theme without feeling overdone.

Plenty of Drinks and Music

If you enjoy live music, lounges and a variety of entertainment, Margaritaville at Sea offers plenty of options.

There were live bands, DJs, lounges and music throughout the ship. Music is clearly a major part of the onboard experience, and we enjoyed it.

The fiddler at the White Night Party was especially amazing!

The bars also made good drinks, and the coffee shops had a nice selection. We didn't purchase a drink package. I typically had one alcoholic drink and one specialty coffee per day, so purchasing drinks individually worked well for us.

If you're comfortable spending a little extra on drinks, there are plenty of choices.

The Heroes Salute Was Meaningful

One of the most moving experiences for me was the Heroes Salute.

I genuinely appreciate the way Margaritaville at Sea honors veterans and recognizes the sacrifices made by our military members, heroes and first responders. The Heroes Sail Free benefit is another way the cruise line shows its appreciation.

If you qualify for the benefit, I encourage you to look into the current terms and eligibility requirements.

And if you do sail, support the ship while you're onboard. Enjoy the drinks, extras and experiences if they're within your budget. It's a meaningful way to give back while enjoying a vacation.

Other Little Wins

A few other things we enjoyed:

• The big screen near the pool offered good movie options, including nighttime movie nights.
• Jenna said her Pullman bed was comfortable, and she slept well.
• The bars and coffee shops offered a good variety of choices.
• The overall atmosphere was laid-back, casual and relaxed.
• The cruise provided a good mix of activities and downtime.
• The price felt like a strong value for the service and experience we received, especially compared with what we paid for our Disney cruise.

Our suite, in particular, was a fraction of the cost of our Disney cruise, which is worth considering when comparing cruise experiences.

TheThings You Should Know Before Booking

Now let's talk about the things I think potential cruisers should know.

I wouldn't necessarily call these the "bad" parts of the cruise. Many are simply observations, preferences or details that could make a difference depending on what you want from your vacation.

As always, take them for what they're worth!

The Included Food Options Are Somewhat Limited

The included dining options consisted primarily of:

• The buffet
• The main dining room
• Cheeseburger in Paradise
• Frank & Lola's Pizzeria
• Mexican Cutie

There are additional dining options available for purchase, including offerings at the coffee shop, adult pool bar and JWB Steakhouse. We did not get the opportunity to dine at JWB Steakhouse during this sailing.

One thing I would emphasize is to pay attention to dining hours.

Many food venues close relatively early, around 9:30 p.m., with pizza being an exception. Soft-serve ice cream also closes around that time.

If you're used to having lots of late-night food options on other cruise lines, this is something to plan around.

The Food Was Just OK

The food was fine. It was nice not to have to cook, clean or prepare meals, and we certainly found things to eat.

However, in terms of taste and overall food experience, I would compare it more closely to Royal Caribbean than Disney.

One major exception?

The Icebox Cappuccino Cake.

It was my favorite food item on the entire cruise. I would happily have it again!

The Pool Area Was Small and Crowded

The pool area was quite crowded on sea days.

This isn't necessarily unusual on a cruise ship, especially when everyone is onboard and looking for a place to cool off. However, the pool area felt small, and guests who prioritize a spacious pool deck may want to keep that in mind.

There Are No Lifeguards on Duty

This was a big surprise for me.

There are no lifeguards on duty at the pools.

If you're traveling with little ones, please be aware of this and plan to supervise your children closely. Parents and guardians are responsible for monitoring their children in and around the water.

This is an important detail to understand before booking.

The Atrium Can Be Loud

I love the look of the Flip Flop Atrium, but its open design has a downside.

Because the atrium extends upward through multiple decks, live entertainment and parties can carry sound into the stateroom areas near the atrium.

During events such as the White Neon Night, the noise was noticeable in the surrounding areas.

If I were helping a client select a stateroom, I would be cautious about booking rooms close to the atrium elevators, particularly for travelers who prioritize quiet surroundings or early bedtimes.

Parts of the Ship Feel Older

There are areas of the ship that feel dated.

Some sections have an older cruise-ship feel, and travelers who are looking for a newer, more modern ship may notice the difference.

That doesn't mean the ship isn't enjoyable, but it's worth setting realistic expectations.

Kids Club Hours Were Limited

Jenna loved the kids club, but the operating hours were somewhat limited.

The club would open for a period of time and then close for cleaning. Depending on your family's schedule, these closures may require some planning.

I'd recommend checking the current kids club schedule once onboard and making sure you understand the hours of operation.

There is also no childcare available for children under age 3, so families traveling with toddlers should take that into consideration.

Room Service and Sodas Are Extra

A couple of cost considerations to keep in mind:

• Room service is not complimentary.
• Sodas are not included.

These are small details, but they can affect your onboard spending if you're accustomed to having those things included on other cruise lines.

The Waterslide Has Limited Hours and a Less Convenient Location

Jenna enjoyed the waterslide, but it does have limited operating hours, typically around 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The schedule may vary, so be sure to check onboard.

The slide is located toward the back of the ship near the adult pool and children's playground. It isn't positioned directly beside the main family pool area.

That means if you're enjoying the pool and decide you want to ride the slide, it may require a little more planning and walking.

The Outdoor Kids' Play Area Is Small

The outdoor children's play area was smaller than I expected and had no shade.

I would personally consider it most appropriate for younger children, approximately ages 4–5 and under, depending on the child's interests and abilities.

It's located on the top deck, away from many of the other activities, and receives full sun. Be mindful of hot equipment and surfaces, especially during warmer weather.

Families with older children may find that the other recreation options, such as pickleball, mini-golf and the waterslide, are more appealing.

The Bed Wasn't Our Favorite

Our suite was wonderful overall, but the bed was the one thing we didn't love.

We found it uncomfortable, which is obviously a personal preference and can vary from person to person. However, since a comfortable bed is important to me after a busy day of exploring, it was worth mentioning.

The Kids Club Doesn't Have a Direct Way to Contact Parents

Because the ship doesn't offer an app or onboard Wi-Fi system for managing an app in the same way some other cruise lines do, the kids club didn't have a direct way to contact us.

We gave the counselors a couple of locations where we planned to be so they would know where to find us if needed.

This worked for our family, but it's something to be aware of if you're accustomed to receiving messages or notifications from a kids club while onboard.

You May Feel More Ship Movement

Islander is a smaller ship, and you can feel the movement, especially toward the front of the ship and on lower decks.

I struggled with seasickness on our first day at sea. I was also dealing with an ear issue at the time, which may have contributed to how I felt.

If you're prone to motion sickness, I'd recommend discussing prevention strategies with your healthcare professional before sailing and considering your stateroom location carefully.

The Halloween Decorations Were a Little Underwhelming

Since we sailed during the Halloween season, I was excited to see the decorations.

I personally found them a little underwhelming compared with what I've experienced at other destinations. This is subjective, of course, and may vary depending on the sailing and how much seasonal theming is offered.

Embarkation at Tampa Was a Challenge

As I mentioned earlier, embarkation day was difficult.

The previous sailing's disembarkation process appeared to create significant traffic and confusion at the port. Parking was a nightmare, and communication was limited.

My impression was that this was more of a Port of Tampa logistical issue than a reflection of the ship's onboard operations.

Once we were parked and inside the terminal, our suite check-in was smooth, and embarkation went very quickly.

I'd simply advise clients to allow extra time and be prepared for potential delays at the port.

The Smoking Area Wasn't My Favorite Location

I didn't love the location of the smoking area.

It was situated one deck above a main pool area, and depending on the wind direction, you could smell smoke near the pool. It was also located along the route to the upper deck recreation areas, including cornhole.

The area was frequently busy.

I don't smoke, so I didn't use it, but my husband occasionally enjoyed a cigar. This is simply something I would keep in mind when considering the ship's layout and onboard atmosphere.

The "Ugly": My Honest Take

I'm going to leave some of my personal thoughts in this section to myself.

Not because I didn't enjoy the cruise, but because my job as a travel advisor isn't to tell everyone which cruise line they should book.

It's to listen to what my clients want, understand their priorities and help them choose an experience that fits their family.

And here's the truth:

I have clients who would absolutely love Margaritaville at Sea.

I also have clients I would steer toward another cruise line.

That's not a bad thing. It's exactly why working with a travel advisor can be valuable.

Margaritaville at Sea might be the perfect fit for your family.

It might not be.

It might be Disney.

It might be Royal Caribbean.

It might be something completely different.

There isn't one cruise line that is the right choice for everyone. The best vacation is the one that aligns with your expectations, travel style, budget and priorities.

That's where I come in.

So… Is Margaritaville at Sea Really a Party Boat?

This is the question I get asked the most, and here's my honest answer:

It can be a party boat. It doesn't have to be. But it is definitely a drinking boat.

Let me explain.

The atmosphere onboard is casual, laid-back and centered around music, drinks and having a good time. There are pool parties, live entertainment, DJs and plenty of opportunities to socialize.

If you want to party, you'll find opportunities to do that.

But here's what surprised me:

There are also plenty of places to get away from the party atmosphere.

The ship has numerous lounges, quieter spaces and areas where you can sit, relax and enjoy yourself. Depending on the crowd and the events happening during your sailing, you may be able to spend much of your day without feeling surrounded by a party.

The cruise is largely what you make of it.

If avoiding the more energetic atmosphere is a priority, I'd recommend:

• Avoiding the pool areas during sail away and scheduled pool events.
• Skipping the White Night Party if that isn't your preferred type of entertainment.
• Exploring the ship's lounges and quieter spaces.
• Taking advantage of the times when the pools aren't hosting constant entertainment.

The pool areas also have downtime, so it's not as if the party atmosphere is nonstop everywhere on the ship.

For me, the biggest takeaway is that you can choose how much you participate in the party scene.

The atmosphere is there, but you don't have to make it the center of your cruise.

My Overall Rating: 7or 8/10

If I had to give our 4-night Margaritaville at Sea Islander cruise an overall rating, I'd give it a 7 or 8 out of 10.

And yes, I genuinely enjoyed it.

I think four nights was the perfect length for our family. It gave us enough time to experience the ship, enjoy the activities and relax without feeling like we needed to be constantly on the go.

Jenna loved the cruise and is already asking to go again.

We will sail Margaritaville at Sea again, and hopefully next time we'll be able to bring a group of friends and family along with us.

The ship has a laid-back, relaxed atmosphere. There was a good balance of activities and downtime, which was exactly what we needed. Sometimes, you just need a vacation where you can do absolutely nothing for a little while.

Our suite was exceptionally nice, and the crew was hardworking, friendly and helpful.

Was everything perfect? No.

Would I recommend it to every client? Also no.

But did we enjoy ourselves? Absolutely.

And that's what matters.

Is Margaritaville at Sea Right for You?

That depends on what you're looking for.

If you want a casual cruise with music, drinks, entertainment and a relaxed atmosphere, Margaritaville at Sea may be worth considering.

If you're traveling with children, there are some definite positives, including the kids club and recreation options. However, you'll want to consider the limited kids club hours, lack of childcare for children under 3, pool supervision and size of the outdoor play area.

If you're looking for a luxury experience, extensive included dining options or a brand-new ship, you may want to explore other cruise lines.
